Ingredients
- 8 slices of rustic Italian bread
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 8 slices of prosciutto
- 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
- 4 tablespoons marinara sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish
If you need to make some substitutions, consider using sourdough bread or even a whole grain option for a different texture. For a vegetarian version, swap the prosciutto with roasted red peppers or grilled zucchini slices.
Instructions
- Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of bread, just like my abuela used to teach me, ensuring every corner is covered for a perfect golden crust.
- In a bowl, mix the mozzarella, Parmesan, and Italian seasoning. This combination of cheeses brings the Italian twist to our dish, reminiscent of many pasta nights in my family kitchen.
- Place four slices of bread, buttered side down, on the baking sheet. Top each with a slice of prosciutto, a generous spoonful of the cheese mixture, and a tablespoon of marinara sauce.
- Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side up. Press them gently to ensure everything stays in place.
- Heat olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the sandwiches, cooking each side for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are a perfect golden-brown.
- Transfer the sandwiches back to the baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving. Enjoy this dish with your loved ones, sharing stories and laughter, just like we did in my family.
