Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 cups cooked egg noodles
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Chopped parsley for garnish (optional)
Feel free to substitute ground turkey for a leaner option, and if you’re feeling adventurous, try adding a pinch of cumin for a slight nod to my family’s favorite flavors.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until it’s browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet, cooking until the onion is translucent, about 3 minutes.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, oregano, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked egg noodles and sour cream, ensuring the noodles are evenly coated.
- In a 9×13 inch baking dish, layer half of the noodle mixture at the bottom.
- Spread half of the beef mixture over the noodles, followed by half of the cheddar and mozzarella cheeses.
- Repeat the layers, ending with a generous topping of cheese.
- Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
- Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving, garnished with chopped parsley if desired.
Remember, cooking is about intuition and enjoyment. If it smells good, you’re on the right track!
