Ingredients
To create these delicious burgers, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- 1 pound ground chicken
- 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
- 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)
- 4 whole wheat burger buns
- 1 cup tzatziki sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- Fresh lettuce leaves
- Sliced tomatoes and cucumbers for topping
If you’re out of ground chicken, ground turkey can be a great substitute. And if you prefer a dairy-free option, consider using dairy-free feta cheese. The beauty of cooking is in its flexibility, allowing you to make the dish your own, much like how my abuela taught me to trust my instincts in the kitchen.
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the ground chicken, feta cheese, parsley, mint, red onion, garlic, oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix until all ingredients are well incorporated, but be careful not to overwork the meat.
- Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 1/2 inch thick. Remember, cooking is as much about feel as it is about precision, a lesson I learned while helping my abuela make tortillas.
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the chicken patties, cooking for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F and the patties are golden brown.
- While the patties are cooking, toast the burger buns lightly on a separate skillet or toaster.
- Assemble the burgers by placing a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, followed by the cooked chicken patty. Top with sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, and a generous dollop of tzatziki sauce before placing the top bun.
- Serve immediately, and enjoy the burst of Mediterranean flavors that will surely remind you of a Greek taverna by the sea.
