Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups warm milk (about 110°F)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Optional: 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon for a hint of spice
Feel free to swap out the milk for almond or oat milk if you’re keeping it dairy-free, and if you’re feeling adventurous, add a handful of raisins or nuts for extra texture.
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Give it a good stir to mix the dry ingredients.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the warm milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients.
- Mix until a soft dough forms. It should be slightly sticky but manageable. If it’s too sticky, add a bit more flour, one tablespoon at a time.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes. I like to think of this as meditation, letting the rhythmic process clear my mind.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough to release air, then divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a roll.
- Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover again, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. The fragrance will fill your home, reminiscent of cozy mornings and family gatherings.
- Let the rolls cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm, ideally with a cup of coffee or tea.
