Learn how to make delicious Cajun Chicken Sloppy Joes. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for extra heat)
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4-6 hamburger buns
  • Optional toppings: shredded lettuce, sliced pickles, or coleslaw

Feel free to substitute ground turkey or beef if you prefer, and adjust the spices to suit your taste. My abuela always taught me that recipes are guidelines, and your kitchen is your canvas.

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and red bell pepper, sautéing until they are soft and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
  3. Increase the heat to medium-high, then add the ground chicken to the skillet. Cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until it’s no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes.
  4. Stir in the Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper, ensuring the chicken is well coated.
  5. Reduce the heat to medium, then add the tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, and brown sugar. Mix well and bring the mixture to a simmer.
  6. Let the sloppy joe mixture cook for an additional 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it has thickened to your liking. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Toast the hamburger buns if desired, then spoon a generous portion of the Cajun chicken mixture onto each bun. Top with your choice of shredded lettuce, sliced pickles, or coleslaw.

Cooking, much like life, is all about adjustments. If you find the mixture too thick, a splash of chicken broth will do the trick. If it’s too spicy, a dollop of sour cream can provide some balance.
