Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 whole wheat pita breads
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Optional: 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley for garnish
Feel free to substitute ground turkey for the beef if you prefer a leaner option, or try a mix of your favorite cheeses for a different flavor profile.
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and sliced mushrooms, cooking until the mushrooms are tender and any liquid has evaporated, approximately 5 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Stir in the paprika, salt, and black pepper, cooking until the beef is browned and cooked through, about 7-8 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. While the oven is heating, stir the shredded mozzarella cheese into the beef and mushroom mixture, allowing it to melt and combine.
- Cut the pita breads in half and gently open each pocket. Spoon the cheesy beef and mushroom mixture into each pita half, filling them generously.
- Place the filled pitas on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the pitas are warm and slightly crispy.
- If desired, garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
