Ingredients
- 8 slices of day-old bread (preferably brioche or challah)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- Pinch of salt
- Powdered sugar for dusting
- Maple syrup for serving
Substitution suggestions: You can use almond milk for a dairy-free version, and coconut sugar as a brown sugar substitute if you prefer a less processed sweetener.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, brown sugar, and a pinch of salt until well combined.
- Cut the bread slices into small, bite-sized cubes and place them into the egg mixture. Let them soak for about 5 minutes, ensuring that each piece is thoroughly coated.
- Transfer the soaked bread cubes to the prepared baking dish, arranging them in a single layer.
- Pour the melted butter evenly over the top of the bread cubes, ensuring even coverage.
- Place the dish in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and slightly crispy.
- Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Dust with powdered sugar and serve with a drizzle of maple syrup.
One tip from my experience: Use day-old bread for the best texture. It absorbs the custard mixture better without getting too soggy, which is something my abuela always insisted on when making any kind of French toast.
