Learn how to make delicious Creamy Parmesan Chicken and Orzo. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup orzo pasta
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chicken pieces, seasoning them with salt and pepper, and cook until they’re golden brown and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and garlic. Sauté until the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant, about 3 minutes. This step always brings me back to my childhood, helping my abuela in the kitchen with these very scents wafting through the air.
  3. Add the orzo to the skillet and stir for a minute to coat it with the onion and garlic mixture.
  4. Pour in the chicken broth and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and let it simmer, stirring occasionally, until the orzo is tender and has absorbed most of the liquid, about 10 minutes.
  5. Stir in the heavy cream and Parmesan cheese, allowing the cheese to melt and create a smooth, creamy sauce. Return the chicken to the skillet, along with any juices that have accumulated.
  6. Sprinkle in the dried Italian herbs and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper as needed. Let everything simmer together for another 2-3 minutes, ensuring the flavors meld beautifully.
  7. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving. This final touch adds a pop of color and freshness, reminiscent of the vibrant meals I enjoyed in my youth.
