Ingredients
- 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil for frying
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- Cooked rice, for serving
- Sliced green onions and sesame seeds, for garnish
Feel free to substitute the vegetable oil with avocado or peanut oil for a slightly different flavor profile. If you’re out of rice vinegar, apple cider vinegar can be a handy alternative.
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine cornstarch, flour, salt, and black pepper. Toss the shrimp in the mixture until well coated.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the shrimp in batches, frying each side for about 2-3 minutes until golden and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- In a small saucepan, mix honey, soy sauce, garlic, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally until slightly thickened, about 5 minutes.
- Pour the honey garlic sauce over the fried shrimp, tossing gently to coat them evenly.
- Serve the shrimp over bowls of cooked rice, garnished with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.
My abuela always reminded me that the secret to a good sauce is to “listen” to it — when you can hear it bubbling gently, it’s usually just right!
