Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small head of cabbage, chopped
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese for topping
- Optional: Red pepper flakes for a spicy kick
If you’re out of ground beef, ground turkey or chicken works just as well. And if you like a bit more heat, adding a dash of red pepper flakes will do the trick. This is a recipe that welcomes creativity, much like the meals I grew up with, where every dish was a new adventure.
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant, about 3 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon, for about 6-8 minutes.
- Stir in the chopped cabbage, paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper. Cook until the cabbage is tender, about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- If desired, sprinkle cheddar cheese on top and cover the skillet until the cheese has melted, about 2 minutes.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve hot, perhaps garnished with a sprinkle of fresh herbs if you have them on hand.
One tip from my years in the kitchen: don’t rush the browning of the beef. That caramelization adds a depth of flavor that makes the dish irresistible. It’s a little technique I picked up from watching my abuela cook with such care and attention.
