Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices provolone cheese
For a vegetarian twist, swap the ground beef with lentils or a plant-based meat alternative. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also add a splash of red wine for a deeper flavor profile!
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sweet aroma will remind you of a bustling kitchen filled with family and laughter.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, flour, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for an additional 5 minutes, or until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Preheat your oven broiler. Place the hamburger buns, open-faced, on a baking sheet. Spoon the beef mixture onto the bottom halves of the buns.
- Top each with a slice of provolone cheese. Broil the sandwiches until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 1-2 minutes.
- Assemble the sandwiches by placing the top halves of the buns on each. Serve immediately and watch as smiles spread across your dinner table.
