Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
- Fresh thyme for garnish (optional)
Feel free to substitute the Gruyere with Swiss cheese if you prefer, and don’t be afraid to add a little extra garlic for an extra kick!
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
- Form the mixture into four equal patties. Set aside.
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter and add the sliced onions. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. This step always transports me back to my grandmother’s kitchen, where patience in cooking was a virtue.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and cook for an additional minute, stirring constantly.
- Gradually add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Bring to a simmer and let it thicken, which should take about 5 minutes.
- Return the patties to the skillet, spooning the onion gravy over the top. Cover and let them simmer for another 10 minutes to ensure they’re cooked through.
- Top with shredded Gruyere cheese, cover, and let it melt into a gooey perfection.
- Garnish with fresh thyme before serving, if desired.
