Learn how to make delicious Grandma’s Famous Cinnamon Rolls. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for icing)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt (for icing)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 1/4 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat the milk, melted butter, and water until warm (around 110°F). Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients along with the egg, and mix until just combined.
  3. Gradually add the remaining flour until the dough is soft and slightly sticky. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about an hour.
  5. Once risen, roll the dough into a rectangle about 12×18 inches. Spread the softened butter over the dough’s surface.
  6. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle it evenly over the buttered dough.
  7. Tightly roll up the dough, starting from the longer side, and cut into 12 even pieces.
  8. Place the rolls in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  10. While the rolls are baking, prepare the icing by beating together cream cheese, powdered sugar, butter, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until smooth.
  11. Once the rolls are out of the oven, allow them to cool for a few minutes before spreading the icing generously over them.
