Ingredients
- 12 Hawaiian rolls (cut in half)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- A pinch of salt
- Butter or oil for cooking
- Maple syrup or powdered sugar, for serving
If you’re out of whole milk, feel free to substitute with almond milk or another dairy alternative. For an extra flavor boost, try adding a splash of coconut milk — it pairs beautifully with the Hawaiian rolls.
Instructions
- In a shallow bowl or dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, brown sugar, and salt until well combined.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a bit of butter or oil to coat the surface.
- Dip each half of the Hawaiian roll into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for a few seconds on both sides. Be sure not to oversoak to prevent sogginess.
- Place the soaked rolls onto the hot skillet, cooking for about 3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and cooked through.
- Transfer the French toast to a plate and keep warm while you cook the remaining slices.
- Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup or a dusting of powdered sugar. Enjoy with a side of fresh fruit or your favorite breakfast accompaniments.
When making French toast, I find that using a cast-iron skillet gives the slices a lovely, even browning. It reminds me of the days I spent with my grandmother in the kitchen, learning the importance of using the right tools for the best results.
