Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 3/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil, plus more for drizzling
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup tomato sauce (preferably homemade or high-quality store-bought)
- 8 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
- 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves
- Salt and pepper to taste
Feel free to substitute whole wheat flour for a nuttier flavor or add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for a little heat. Just like in my childhood kitchen, the possibilities are endless when you cook with heart!
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. My abuela always said this is where the love goes in, so don’t rush it!
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a pizza stone or a baking sheet in the oven to heat.
- Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface to your desired thickness. Transfer it to a piece of parchment paper.
- Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the base, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Top with slices of mozzarella cheese and season with salt and pepper.
- Carefully transfer the pizza (on the parchment paper) onto the hot pizza stone or baking sheet.
- Bake for about 10-12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling.
- Remove from the oven, add fresh basil leaves, and drizzle with a little olive oil before serving.
Making pizza is all about the experience, so enjoy each step and feel free to involve your family or friends. It’s a great way to bond and create delicious memories together.
