Ingredients
- 12 ounces ziti pasta
- 2 cups marinara sauce
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 1 cup sour cream
- 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 pound ground Italian sausage
- 1 small onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Feel free to make substitutions to fit your dietary needs or preferences. For a vegetarian version, you can skip the sausage or replace it with a plant-based alternative. The beauty of cooking is in its flexibility, much like the spontaneous meals my grandmother would craft based on what was available in our kitchen.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with a little olive oil.
- Cook the ziti pasta according to the package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, sautéing until the onion is translucent.
- Add the Italian sausage to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Cook until browned and cooked through.
- Stir in the marinara sauce, oregano, and basil. Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes, filling your kitchen with the comforting aroma of herbs and tomatoes.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, sour cream, and half of the Parmesan cheese. This creamy mixture is what makes the ziti feel like a million bucks.
- Layer half of the cooked ziti in the prepared baking dish. Spread the ricotta mixture over the pasta, then layer on the sausage and sauce mixture.
- Top with the remaining ziti, then sprinkle the mozzarella and the remaining Parmesan cheese generously over the top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden. Let it sit for a few minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld wonderfully.
Every time I make this dish, I’m reminded of the patience cooking has taught me. Just like perfecting a dish, some things are worth the wait. And trust me, when that cheese turns golden, you’ll know it was worth every minute.
