Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 2 cups marinara sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 pre-made pie crust or homemade dough (see tips below)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh basil for garnish
Feel free to substitute the ground beef with turkey for a lighter option, or go vegetarian with mushrooms and bell peppers for a meaty texture without the meat!
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). This is the perfect time to put on your favorite playlist and let the music inspire your cooking.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 4 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute, stirring continuously to prevent burning.
- Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef or sausage. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, about 8 minutes.
- Stir in the oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Let these spices infuse the meat with warmth and depth.
- Pour in the marinara sauce and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Transfer the meat sauce into a pie dish or a deep casserole dish. Sprinkle the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses evenly over the top.
- Roll out your pie crust and carefully place it over the filling, tucking the edges into the dish for a neat finish. Cut a few slits in the crust to allow steam to escape.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Just like when I bake with my abuela, the aroma should fill your kitchen with love.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil before serving.
