Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound ground Italian sausage
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1/2 cup diced bell peppers (any color)
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 cup marinara sauce
- 1/2 cup sliced black olives
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Feel free to substitute the ground sausage with ground beef or turkey, and you can swap the mozzarella for your favorite cheese blend. The puff pastry can also be replaced with a homemade or store-bought pie crust if you prefer.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground sausage and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
- Add the mushrooms, bell peppers, onion, and garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the Italian seasoning, marinara sauce, and black olives. Let the mixture simmer for 3-4 minutes, then remove from heat.
- In an ovenproof dish, layer the sausage mixture with the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses, ensuring the cheese is evenly distributed.
- Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and lay it over the top of the dish. Trim any excess pastry and crimp the edges to seal.
- Brush the pastry with the beaten egg to achieve a golden crust. Make a few slits in the pastry to allow steam to escape.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
- Let the Pizza Pot Pie cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy the delicious, melty goodness!
