Ingredients
- 1 pound spicy breakfast sausage
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 can (10 ounces) Rotel diced tomatoes and green chilies, drained
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 cups Bisquick baking mix
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
If you prefer a milder flavor, you can substitute the spicy sausage with a mild version or even try turkey sausage for a lighter option. The cheddar cheese can be swapped with Monterey Jack for a different twist.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. This prevents sticking and makes cleanup a breeze.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, drained Rotel tomatoes, and shredded cheddar cheese. Stir until well blended.
- Add the spicy sausage to the cheese mixture, using your hands to mix until evenly incorporated. As a tip from my grandmother, working with your hands allows you to feel the texture and ensure everything is well mixed.
- Gently fold in the Bisquick baking mix, garlic powder, and black pepper. The dough should be slightly sticky but firm enough to hold its shape.
- Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet, about an inch apart.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the sausage balls are golden brown and cooked through. The aroma will fill your kitchen, reminiscent of those warm family gatherings.
- Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm for the best flavor experience!
