Ingredients
Gathering the right ingredients is the first step towards culinary magic. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 wheel of brie cheese (about 8 ounces)
- 1/2 pound of sausage (Italian or chorizo work well)
- 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon of fresh thyme leaves
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Salt and pepper to taste
If you’re looking for substitutes, ground turkey or vegetarian sausage can easily replace the meat, and a whole wheat pastry can serve as a healthier alternative to puff pastry. As my abuela taught me, flexibility in the kitchen can lead to delightful surprises!
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and garlic, sautéing until translucent and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the sausage to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Cook until the sausage is browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in fresh thyme, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- On a floured surface, roll out the puff pastry to smoothen and slightly enlarge it. Place the brie wheel in the center of the pastry.
- Spoon the sausage mixture over the top of the brie, spreading it evenly.
- Fold the pastry over the brie, gently pressing to seal. Brush the pastry with the beaten egg to enhance its golden appearance when baked.
- Transfer to the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crispy.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving to prevent the cheese from oozing out too quickly.
Cooking is an art of patience and love, much like the lessons I learned stirring pots with my grandmother. Enjoy the process, and don’t rush the magic!
