Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 8 slices Texas toast
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Feel free to swap ground beef with turkey or a plant-based alternative if you prefer. You can also add more veggies or adjust the spices to match your taste buds.
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked, about 8-10 minutes. Drain excess fat.
- Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the vegetables are tender, approximately 5 minutes.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.
- While the meat mixture simmers, preheat your oven to 375°F. Spread butter on one side of each Texas toast slice and place them on a baking sheet.
- Toast the bread in the oven for 5 minutes or until golden brown. Turn the slices over, add a scoop of the sloppy mixture on top of each slice, and sprinkle with cheddar cheese if desired.
- Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve hot and enjoy the delightful messiness of this comforting dish!
