Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (one packet)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup apple butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
If you’re looking to mix things up, you can substitute the apple butter with pumpkin butter for a seasonal twist or add a handful of chopped pecans for a bit of crunch. The possibilities are endless, and each variation brings its own unique flavor profile to the table.
Instructions
- Begin by warming the milk and butter in a small saucepan over low heat until the butter is melted. Let it cool slightly until it’s just warm to the touch.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Pour the warm milk mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until doubled in size. This was always my favorite part as a child, watching the dough transform and grow.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a loaf pan.
- Roll out the risen dough on a floured surface into a rectangle, about 12×20 inches.
- Spread the apple butter evenly over the dough, then sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon on top.
- Cut the dough into six equal strips, stack them, and then cut into six squares. Place the stacks upright in the loaf pan, so the layers are visible.
- Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is cooked through.
- Allow the bread to cool slightly before serving, though it’s hard to resist tearing into it right away!
