Learn how to make delicious Authentic Muffaletta Sandwich. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

To recreate this iconic New Orleans sandwich in your own kitchen, gather the following ingredients:

  • 1 loaf of round Italian bread (about 10 inches in diameter)
  • 1/2 cup olive salad (store-bought or homemade)
  • 4 ounces sliced Genoa salami
  • 4 ounces sliced ham
  • 4 ounces sliced mortadella
  • 4 ounces sliced provolone cheese
  • 4 ounces sliced mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

Feel free to substitute the meats or cheeses based on your preference or availability. When I first made this sandwich, I used what I had on hand, and it was still a hit!

Instructions

Follow these steps to create your own Muffaletta masterpiece:

  1. Begin by slicing the loaf of Italian bread in half horizontally. Scoop out some of the interior to create space for the fillings.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, red wine vinegar, and dried oregano. Brush this mixture onto the cut sides of the bread to infuse flavor.
  3. Spread half of the olive salad over the bottom half of the bread, pressing it into the bread slightly with the back of a spoon.
  4. Layer the salami, ham, mortadella, provolone, and mozzarella evenly over the olive salad.
  5. Top the meats and cheeses with the remaining olive salad, pressing it into the layers.
  6. Place the top half of the bread over the fillings, pressing down gently to compact the sandwich.
  7. Wrap the assembled sandwich tightly in aluminum foil. For the best flavor, let it rest for at least one hour at room temperature or refrigerate overnight.
  8. When ready to serve, slice the sandwich into wedges and enjoy the burst of flavors with each bite.

One of my favorite memories is making this sandwich with my husband Marco, our golden retriever Biscuit wagging his tail hopefully at our feet. It’s a true testament to how food brings people (and pets) together.
