Learn how to make delicious Caramelized Soy Chicken with Garlic Ginger Broth. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Gather these ingredients for a dish that’s sure to become a staple in your kitchen:

  • 1.5 pounds of chicken thighs, skin-on and bone-in
  • 1/3 cup of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 cups of chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons of water
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish (optional)

If you’re out of chicken thighs, chicken breasts can work as a substitute, although they may not offer the same richness. For a gluten-free version, opt for tamari instead of soy sauce.

Instructions

Follow these steps to bring this flavorful dish to life:

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the vegetable oil. Once hot, place the chicken thighs skin-side down. Cook until the skin is golden brown and crispy, about 6-8 minutes.
  2. Flip the chicken and cook for another 5 minutes, then remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium-low and add garlic and ginger. Sauté until fragrant, about 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in the soy sauce, brown sugar, and rice vinegar, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet for extra flavor.
  5. Return the chicken to the skillet, skin-side up, and pour in the chicken broth. Bring to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  6. While the chicken simmers, mix the cornstarch with water to create a slurry. Stir this into the sauce to thicken, cooking for another 5 minutes.
  7. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving, if desired.
