Ingredients
- 1 pound of ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 cup shredded provolone cheese
- Optional: 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
- Optional: 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes for added heat
Feel free to substitute provolone with mozzarella or cheddar cheese for a different flavor profile. If you’re a fan of mushrooms, like my mom, they add a delightful earthiness to the dish. And if you’re like me and enjoy a little kick, don’t shy away from those red pepper flakes!
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onion and bell peppers. Sauté until they are soft and beginning to caramelize, about 5-7 minutes. This step always reminds me of my abuela, who taught me the art of patience in cooking.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. The aroma should remind you of those family gatherings where garlic was always a staple.
- Push the vegetables to one side of the skillet and add the ground beef. Break it up with a spatula, cooking until it’s browned, about 8-10 minutes.
- Mix the vegetables back in with the beef and stir in the Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika. If you’re adding mushrooms, now is the time to do so. Cook for another 3-4 minutes to let the flavors meld together.
- Lower the heat to medium and sprinkle the shredded provolone cheese over the entire skillet. Cover the skillet with a lid and let the cheese melt, about 2 minutes.
- Once the cheese is gooey and inviting, remove from heat and serve hot. Every bite should transport you to a cozy evening, surrounded by loved ones and the warmth of a shared meal.
