Ingredients
- 8 slices of white bread, crusts removed
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup cream cheese, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for cooking
- Maple syrup, for serving
If you’re like me and enjoy experimenting, try using brioche or challah bread for a richer flavor. You can also substitute cream cheese with mascarpone for a different twist.
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.
- Using a rolling pin, flatten each slice of bread until it’s thin and pliable.
- Spread a thin layer of cream cheese on each slice of bread.
- Roll up each slice tightly, with the cream cheese inside.
- In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Dip each roll-up into the egg mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated.
- Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once melted, place the roll-ups seam side down in the skillet.
- Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they’re golden brown and cooked through.
- Immediately roll each cooked roll-up in the cinnamon sugar mixture, ensuring a nice even coating.
- Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup.
One tip I love from my grandmother is to always taste as you go. It helps you adjust flavors and ensures your dish turns out just right.
