Ingredients
- 6 large croissants, preferably a day old
- 8 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup cooked and crumbled bacon (or cooked sausage as an alternative)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh chives (optional for garnish)
Feel free to substitute the bacon with sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers for a vegetarian twist. This dish is all about making it your own.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
- Cut the croissants into bite-sized pieces and layer them evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Pour the egg mixture over the croissants in the baking dish, ensuring all pieces are well-coated.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top, followed by the crumbled bacon.
- Let the casserole sit for at least 20 minutes to allow the croissants to absorb the liquid. This is the perfect time to enjoy a cup of coffee, as my Abuela would have done, savoring the moment.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is set in the center.
- Let it cool slightly before serving. Garnish with fresh chives for a pop of color and freshness.
