Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup chopped pecans (optional)
Feel free to substitute the pecans with walnuts or leave them out entirely if you’d like a nut-free version. And if you’re feeling adventurous, try adding a hint of cinnamon for a Mexican twist, reminiscent of the spiced chocolate flavors I grew up with.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9×9-inch baking dish with parchment paper.
- In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the eggs one at a time to the butter mixture, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix to maintain a tender texture.
- Fold in the chocolate chips and pecans gently with a spatula.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly with a spatula.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
- Allow the dessert to cool in the pan on a wire rack before slicing into squares.
Every time I bake these, I’m reminded of the patience my grandmother taught me, urging me to wait just those few extra minutes until the edges were perfectly set and the center was just right.
