Ingredients
Gathering your ingredients is the first step towards creating this comforting dish. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 pound of breakfast sausage (crumbled)
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups of milk (whole or 2% work best)
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1 teaspoon of mustard powder
- 6 slices of bread (cubed)
- 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup of chopped bell peppers (optional for a colorful touch)
- 1/4 cup of chopped green onions (optional for garnish)
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can swap out the sausage for bacon or even use a vegetarian sausage alternative. The bread can be any type you have on hand, though I personally love using a crusty sourdough for added texture.
Instructions
Follow these simple steps to bring your casserole to life:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set it aside.
- In a large skillet, cook the crumbled sausage over medium heat until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, black pepper, and mustard powder until well combined.
- Add the cubed bread and cooked sausage into the egg mixture, stirring gently to ensure the bread is thoroughly coated.
- Layer half of the shredded cheese in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Pour the egg and bread mixture over the cheese.
- Top with the remaining cheese, and sprinkle the optional chopped bell peppers for extra color and flavor.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden and the center is set. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.
- Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before garnishing with chopped green onions. Slice and serve.
Growing up, I learned from my grandmother that cooking is as much about intuition as it is about following recipes. So feel free to adjust the seasoning to your taste!
