Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
- 1/4 cup ice water
- 5 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (optional, for topping)
Feel free to substitute the apples with pears or even a mix of your favorite fruits for a unique twist. And if you’re out of brown sugar, a mix of granulated sugar and a tablespoon of molasses works wonders.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Add the chilled butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough begins to come together. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- While the dough chills, prepare the filling by combining the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch in a large bowl. Set aside.
- Roll out half of the dough to fit the bottom of the prepared pan. Press it evenly into the pan and prick with a fork.
- Pour the apple mixture over the crust, spreading it out evenly.
- Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the apple filling. Seal the edges and cut slits on top for venting.
- Brush the top with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Remove from the oven and let cool before slicing into bars.
As you bake, let the scents transport you to a cozy place, perhaps reminding you of a bustling kitchen filled with family and laughter. That’s the magic of cooking.
