Learn how to make delicious French Onion Beef and Noodles. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 pound beef sirloin, cut into thin strips
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 8 ounces egg noodles
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese (optional)
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef strips and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil and the sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. This step always reminds me of my grandmother’s patience and the magic of slow cooking.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to coat. Cook for 1 minute, then gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps.
  4. Add the Worcestershire sauce and thyme, and season with salt and pepper. Return the beef to the skillet, reduce the heat, and let it simmer for another 10 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  5. Meanwhile, cook the egg noodles according to package instructions. Drain and add the noodles to the skillet, tossing to combine with the beef and onion mixture.
  6. For a touch of indulgence, sprinkle the grated Gruyère cheese over the top and let it melt into the sauce. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.
