Total Time:45 minutes
Yield:4 servings
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef (or substitute with ground turkey for a leaner option)
1 cup bread crumbs
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 large egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 cups beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or substitute with Swiss cheese)
Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
Form the mixture into 1.5-inch meatballs and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs and brown them on all sides, about 5-6 minutes. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
In the same skillet, add butter and onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft and caramelized, about 20 minutes. Add brown sugar halfway through to enhance caramelization.
Once the onions are caramelized, add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer.
Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes, until the meatballs are fully cooked.
Sprinkle shredded Gruyère cheese over the meatballs. Cover the skillet and let the cheese melt, about 3-4 minutes.
Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving.
