Learn how to make delicious Ham and Cheese Butter Biscuits. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.
Total Time:45 minutes
Yield:4 servings
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
3/4 cup buttermilk
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup diced ham
1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. This is reminiscent of the way my abuela would start her baking, ensuring everything was perfectly combined.
Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. This step always reminds me of my first baking lessons with my mom, teaching me patience and precision.
Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and diced ham, making sure they are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
Pour in the buttermilk and gently mix until the dough just comes together. Avoid over-mixing to keep the biscuits tender.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently, folding it over itself a few times. This creates those lovely layers we all adore in biscuits.
Pat the dough out into a 1-inch thick rectangle. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out rounds, re-rolling the scraps as necessary.
Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a bit of space between each one. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
Once baked, let them cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving warm, garnished with chopped chives if desired.
