Learn how to make delicious Herb and Cheese Potato Gratin. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

To create this comforting dish, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 2 pounds of Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

If Gruyère is not available, feel free to substitute it with sharp cheddar or fontina for a slightly different flavor profile.

Instructions

Follow these steps to bring this dish to life:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. In a saucepan over low heat, combine the heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, thyme, and rosemary. Simmer gently for about 5 minutes to infuse the flavors.
  3. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish, slightly overlapping them.
  4. Season the potato layer with salt and pepper, then pour half of the cream mixture over the top.
  5. Sprinkle half of the Gruyère and Parmesan cheeses over the potatoes.
  6. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, seasoning, cream mixture, and cheeses.
  7. Dot the top with small pieces of butter for added richness.
  8. Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  10. Let the gratin rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld together beautifully.
