Learn how to make delicious Lemon Blueberry Sweet Rolls. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) instant yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk, warmed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • Zest of 2 lemons
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

If you need to make substitutions, feel free to use frozen blueberries if fresh ones aren’t in season, but be sure to thaw them first. Almond milk can replace regular milk for a dairy-free option, and if you’re out of cream cheese, a bit of Greek yogurt can help achieve that creamy texture.

Instructions

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the warm milk, melted butter, egg, and lemon zest. Make sure the milk is warm to the touch but not hot, as you don’t want to kill the yeast.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, until it’s smooth and elastic. If you have kids around, this is the perfect time to get them involved! Little hands love to knead dough.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it doubles in size. This rising time always reminds me of the anticipation of waiting for tamales to cook during family gatherings.
  7. Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently and roll it out into a rectangle on a floured surface.
  8. Spread the softened cream cheese over the dough, then sprinkle the blueberries evenly on top, followed by a drizzle of lemon juice.
  9. Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice it into 12 even pieces.
  10. Place the rolls cut-side-up in the prepared baking dish, cover them, and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and the kitchen smells like heaven.
  12. While the rolls bake, prepare the glaze by mixing powdered sugar with vanilla extract and just enough lemon juice to achieve a drizzle-worthy consistency.
  13. Once the rolls are out of the oven, let them cool slightly before drizzling the glaze over the top. Enjoy warm!
