Ingredients
- 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons sesame oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 1 tablespoon gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
- 2 cups cooked jasmine rice
- 1 cup thinly sliced green onions
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
- 1 cup steamed broccoli (optional)
For those who might not have gochujang on hand, a mix of sriracha and a bit of sugar can be a decent substitute. And if you’re out of flank steak, skirt steak or even thinly sliced chicken can work wonders too.
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, minced garlic, ginger, gochujang, and rice vinegar. This marinade is where the magic begins, infusing the steak with bold flavors.
- Add the sliced steak to the marinade, ensuring each piece is well-coated. Marinate for at least 30 minutes, or refrigerate overnight for deeper flavor.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated steak in a single layer, cooking in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Sear for 2-3 minutes on each side until nicely browned.
- Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with water to create a slurry.
- Once all the steak is cooked, return it to the skillet and pour in the cornstarch slurry. Stir continuously until the sauce thickens and coats the steak, about 2 minutes.
- To assemble, divide the cooked rice among bowls, top with sticky garlic steak, and garnish with green onions and sesame seeds. Add steamed broccoli for an extra dose of greens.
I remember the first time I made this dish; the aroma wafted through my kitchen, reminding me of the bustling food stalls I visited in Seoul. It’s these moments that make cooking such a joy for me.
