Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (or turkey for a lighter version)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 8 slices of Texas toast
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Feel free to substitute turkey for beef if you’re looking for a leaner option. You can also spice things up by adding chili powder or smoked paprika for an extra kick!
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F. Place the Texas toast slices on a baking sheet and set aside.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until it’s browned and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Drain excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer the mixture for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.
- Meanwhile, toast the Texas toast in the oven for about 5 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Spoon the sloppy joe mixture generously over each slice of toast. Top with shredded cheddar cheese.
- Return to the oven for another 5 minutes, just until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve hot, and enjoy the journey back to simpler times!
Pro Tip: Keep an eye on the toast to prevent over-browning. The goal is a perfect, crispy base to hold the savory goodness!
