Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 2 red chilies, sliced (adjust to taste)
- 1 tablespoon fish sauce
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 cup fresh Thai basil leaves
- 4 cups cooked jasmine rice
- Optional: Fried eggs, for serving
For those who prefer a milder spice level, feel free to reduce the chilies or substitute with a milder pepper. If you can’t find Thai basil, sweet basil is a decent alternative, though it will slightly alter the unique flavor profile of the dish.
Instructions
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic and sliced onion, sautéing until fragrant and the onion is translucent, about 2-3 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned, about 6-8 minutes.
- Stir in the sliced red chilies, fish sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar. Mix well to combine all the flavors.
- Once the beef is fully cooked and the sauces have thickened slightly, toss in the fresh Thai basil leaves. Stir until the basil is wilted and everything is well incorporated.
- Serve the savory beef mixture over bowls of warm jasmine rice. For an extra treat, top each bowl with a fried egg.
As you cook, remember the wise words of my abuela: “Trust your senses.” The aroma of the basil and garlic will guide you, just as she taught me when I was a curious nine-year-old in her kitchen.
