Learn how to make delicious Thai Basil Beef Rice Bowl. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 red chilies, sliced (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup fresh Thai basil leaves
  • 4 cups cooked jasmine rice
  • Optional: Fried eggs, for serving

For those who prefer a milder spice level, feel free to reduce the chilies or substitute with a milder pepper. If you can’t find Thai basil, sweet basil is a decent alternative, though it will slightly alter the unique flavor profile of the dish.

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic and sliced onion, sautéing until fragrant and the onion is translucent, about 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned, about 6-8 minutes.
  3. Stir in the sliced red chilies, fish sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar. Mix well to combine all the flavors.
  4. Once the beef is fully cooked and the sauces have thickened slightly, toss in the fresh Thai basil leaves. Stir until the basil is wilted and everything is well incorporated.
  5. Serve the savory beef mixture over bowls of warm jasmine rice. For an extra treat, top each bowl with a fried egg.

As you cook, remember the wise words of my abuela: “Trust your senses.” The aroma of the basil and garlic will guide you, just as she taught me when I was a curious nine-year-old in her kitchen.
